On March 31, 2010, the HR & OD Community in India lost one of its most commended missionaries and CFI lost one of its beloved Honorary Fellows - Dr. Udai Pareek. Fondly known as the ‘Father of HRD’ in India, he served as a pathfinder, researcher, consultant, philosopher, teacher and the ideal role model for many in this field.

| Systems Perspective as a differentiating Coaching competency |

The importance of a Systems Perspective for Coaches goes beyond mere effectiveness – it seems a pre-requisite. It has been our experience in CFI that when Organisations seek out Coaches, they almost subconsciously seek out not just the most skillful Coach but the Coach who brings the greatest Systems Perspective to their Coaching engagement. They do this by seeking our Coaches who have “been there and done that” - Coaches who have experienced or witnessed all or some of these system issues and dilemmas. In this article, I would like to examine the subject from a variety of perspectives so that Coaches are able to nurture and develop this dimension and also leverage it in their Coaching engagements.

| Just for a moment Imagine you work for the UN. You are currently posted in the capital of a particularly disturbed country in Africa. In the middle of an important meeting, your security officer rushes in to inform you that there is a bomb threat and all of you have to immediately evacuate the building. It is quite likely that what you choose to do first would be influenced by your psychological type because ‘type’ influences your every day choices and behaviour.
