Why does an entrepreneur attempt to do something that has never been done? To realise a purpose? To make the world a better place?
What does it take an entrepreneur CEO to deliver what is called “moonshot performance?”
I realise it is not just mastery, autonomy and purpose. It takes a $1 trillion in rewards over the next 10 years!
Well the board approved it and maybe the entrepreneur will deliver the multi-fold market valuation and a million humanlike robots and several other goals tied to this reward.
I am no one to judge the rightness or wrongness of these decisions. I know very little. Winners can and will take it all.
But I do think it is wrong to ask young employees who are struggling to hold on to their jobs and pay their bills, who struggle to commute and get to work and back every day, to pursue “purpose” and be driven by “larger aspirations” and work even harder.
It may be wrong to scoff at employees who change jobs every two years to earn a little more and de-risk their lives. They do not know what will happen to them even in 2 years you see. Forget 10 years.
It may be mistaken to expect employees to take ownership and offer discretionary effort and stay actively engaged.
I think the world and its rules have changed drastically. It may be useful to rethink what we expect from both our young employees and CEOs! Afterall, all of us in many ways are products of our context.
